mark_haddonஇன்னும் விடுமுறைதான்; இன்று என் மகள் எழுதிய பதிவு. Curious Incident of the Dog at the Night Time என்பது புகழ் பெற்ற ஒரு ஷெர்லாக் ஹோம்ஸ் பஞ்ச் டயலாக் என்பது நினைவிருக்கலாம்.

ஓவர் டு ஸ்ரேயா!

It wasn’t until I realized it was a mandatory assignment for an AP Psychology class that I started reading “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time” this summer. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much out of it. I thought it was just one of those things I had to do and be done with.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the book was actually a pretty entertaining read. It wasn’t exactly the kind I couldn’t put down, but it was definitely a page-turner.

The story circulates around the protagonist, Christopher Boone, and his investigation of a local murder in his neighborhood. The murder of Mrs. Shears’ dog, Wellington. Though never explicitly mentioned, Christopher probably registers somewhere on the autism spectrum, due to his inability to empathize or properly communicate with other people as well his exceptional cognitive ability in math and science. The plot of this novel is easy to follow and certainly predictable, however, I found it interesting to watch the investigation unfold in the way Christopher witnessed it.

The prevalent themes in the novel were definitely the struggle for independence, as well as the subjectivity of the entire story. This novel is similar to other coming-of-age stories such as The Catcher in the Rye in the sense that Christopher, like virtually all fictional teenagers, desires self-sufficiency and independence. What makes this interesting, however, is that Christopher can never be fully independent due to his condition. He strives for autonomy in subtle ways such as lying to/disobeying his overprotective father, planning for college, and most significantly, investigating Wellington’s murder.

The murder investigation serves purposes other than discovering truth and bringing justice, it allows Christopher to overcome the obstacles of his condition. The biggest way in which Christopher demonstrates his new found yearning for self-sufficiency and independence is when he survives a solo trip to London to meet the mother he previously thought deceased. This is a journey of symbolic as well as literal significance as it teaches Christopher how to battle the adversities he faces, and how to overcome his struggles despite the restraints of his life. In that sense, I thought this book was a lot more interesting once I read between the lines, rather than merely taking it at surface level.

I would definitely recommend this book to other people, and I’d hope they would enjoy it as much as I did.
